When you really need information at your fingertips, smartphones are ‘the bomb’. We tend to be Android / Samsung smartphoners so if you are an iPhone user look for something equivalent if the exact app isn’t available. We have found the following smartphone apps to be incredibly helpful and informative when you hit the road by teardrop or RV:
Army Knife – This app gives you many handy utilities at your fingertips!! Flashlight, Unit Converter, Timer, Stopwatch, Compass, Bubble Level, Calculator, Magnifying Glass, Mirror & Ruler. On the road, we’ve used the flashlight to find our way at night, the Compass while hiking, the Bubble Level for getting our trailers ‘just right’ at our campsite (required when running a fridge on propane!), and the magnifying glass to help us see tiny things because our eyes are getting old.
All Stays Camp & RVs – All Stays is a great app to find RV-centric resources on the road. It knows where you are, and lets you know where the closest resources for places to stay or things you need. You can filter by:
• Commercial Parks – RV Parks, KOA, Jellystone, 1000 Trails, Moose Lodge, Elks Lodge, and 55+.
• Government Parks – National Parks, US Forest Service, State Parks, Public Lands, County/City Parks, Military, Army Corps, Fairgrounds
• Stores (often allow free overnight RV parking) – WalMart, Costco, Sams Club, Camping World, Cracker Barrel
• Sports Stores (often allow free overnight RV parking) – Gander Mountain, Cabelas, REI, Big 5, Dicks Sporting Goods, Bass Pro Shops
• Other Areas – Rest Areas, RV Dump, Casino, Low Clearance
• Gas Stations (primarily Diesel) – Pilot Flying J, TA Travel Center, Petro Center, Loves Travel Stop, Ambest, Other Fuel Stops
We use All Stays primarily to find the nearest Dump Station, but most commercial RV parks have a place to dump your holding tanks.
Gas Buddy – GasBuddy helps you find the cheapest gas prices in your area. In one click, locate gas stations near you and see their current gas prices. GasBuddy is a community of users working together to update gas prices to help everyone save money on gas. We also use it fo narrow our search down to just deisel for our Jeep since not all gas stations carry it.
Google Maps – Never carry a paper map again! Use Google Maps with turn by turn voice navigation. Map your course to adventure and use it to find a restaurant or store along your route. Also helpful for finding phone numbers and Google reviews.
Good Sam Camping – This is our favorite tool to find quality RV parks. Their 1-10 rating system on Facility, Restrooms and Appeal are really insightful. Visitor reviews are very helpful to find a nice resting spot that meets your standards. They have pictures, rates, and contact info handy. You can also filter by distance, rating and features. You can find parks that are pet friendly, have swimming, WiFi, and are open by season. We have used this many times to find pet-friendly 9+ rated RV parks and have never been disappointed.
Sanidumps RV Dump Station – This is where to go when your RV has to go! The free version of this app is really not any better than AllStays for finding dump sites, but the paid/premium version of this app displays step-by-step driving directions, favorites, and GPS coordinates for each site. Sanidumps.com has the largest listing of RV dump stations on the internet. Not many people can claim that…or would want to…
WeatherBug – Get the latest current conditions, forecast, weather alerts, radar and more! WeatherBug brings the most accurate, reliable and timely weather information directly to your phone. Complete with Doppler radar, severe weather alerts, maps, forecasts and much more, WeatherBug is the most comprehensive weather app available.
